Paris-Saclay University (Université Paris-Saclay) is a world-leading research university located on the Paris-Saclay Plateau, near École Polytechnique. It is part of France’s Excellence Initiative and is recognized as one of the top universities globally. The university originated from the University of Paris, founded in the late 12th century, and was restructured and consolidated in 2020. Paris-Saclay represents 13% of France’s total research capacity and is often referred to as "the beating heart of French science."
The university aims to be among the top 10 universities in the world and the leading university in Europe. During Napoleon's era, highly specialized institutions were created, but they remained small, uncoordinated, and fragmented. To compete with rising global academic giants such as Harvard and MIT, President Nicolas Sarkozy launched the Saclay Plan in 2008, creating Europe’s largest technology and research campus. The project continued under President Emmanuel Macron, and it was prioritized as a major EU and French national educational initiative, with an initial funding of €7.5 billion.
As of January 2023, Paris-Saclay University has a student body of 48,000, including 4,800 doctoral students. The university comprises 17 graduate schools and one Optical Research Institute, as well as the Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies (IHES). It has established multiple joint research laboratories with France’s leading research institutions, such as:
CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research)
INRIA (National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology)
CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission)
