Paris Cité University (formerly University of Paris) is a world-class, multidisciplinary research university located in the capital of France, Paris. Its teaching history dates back to the mid-12th century. The university was officially recognized by King Philip II in 1200 and Pope Innocent III in 1215. The Sorbonne College, founded in 1261, later became the core of the university. However, its origins can be traced even further back to 1150-1160.
In 1167, scholars and students returning from Paris founded the first English university, Oxford University. During the French Revolution in 1793, the University of Paris was dissolved, but it was reestablished in 1896. In 1968, the university was again split into 13 independent universities (Paris 1 to Paris 13) due to student protests. Each of the new universities became independent, and their numbers only indicate the order of creation, not their prestige or academic quality. Although all 13 universities were multidisciplinary, each had specific areas of academic focus.
In 2019, Paris Descartes University (Paris 5), Paris Diderot University (Paris 7), and the Paris Geophysical Institute merged and retained the University of Paris name. However, in March 2023, the university was officially renamed Paris Cité University.
