Aix-Marseille University (Aix-Marseille Université, AMU) is the largest multidisciplinary university in France, with five large international-standard campuses, 80,000 students, and nearly 8,000 faculty and staff members. The university is committed to developing world-class interdisciplinary higher education and research clusters, earning it the title of a "research-intensive university." It has 122 research institutes affiliated with major national research organizations.
AMU traces its origins to 1409, when Louis II, Count of Provence, founded the University of Aix. Following the May 1968 student protests, the French public university system was reformed, leading to the division of AMU into three separate universities:
Université de Provence (Aix-Marseille I) – focused on literature, arts, and humanities.
Université de la Méditerranée (Aix-Marseille II) – specialized in technology, medicine, and engineering.
Université Paul Cézanne (Aix-Marseille III) – focused on economics, management, and law.
In 2012, these three universities were reunified to form Aix-Marseille University. The university is now part of France’s Excellence Initiative Universities.
